ACTION ALERT: Make your voice heard!

Join Sustainable Hyattsville, Neighbors of the Northwest Branch, and Anacostia Riverkeeper in opposing development at Suffrage (Magruder) Point.

This summer Werrlein Properties illegally began development on luxury townhomes in the floodplain next to Driskell Park and Magruder Woods Park. Werrlein should have obtained a wetland disruption permit prior to doing any work in the floodplain, but they did not. They were forced to stop work in July and have subsequently applied for the wetland disruption permit.

Anacostia Riverkeeper opposes the new permit application because of the property’s location in a floodplain. The Suffrage (Magruder) Point property was zoned as Open Space in 2004 at the City of Hyattsville’s request because of its unsuitability for development as it is located in a floodplain. To build climate resiliency, Suffrage (Magruder) Point should not be developed by anyone but rather re-greened to provide public space and restore forest in accordance with County and Sate efforts to restore the Anacostia River watershed.

Anacostia Riverkeeper has been working with partners driving opposition to this development project for the past few months, and now we need your help! Write to the Maryland Department of Environment (MDE) expressing your opposition to Werrlein’s plan and to their permit request. Also, urge MDE to extend the public comment period. All letters should be sent to Ryan.Din@maryland.gov.

Letters are due by January 15th.
