Single use plastics are one of the greatest threats to the Anacostia River. In 2025 alone we have already collected an estimated 14,000 plastic bottles from our waterways. Over the last 10 years, plastic bottles consistently accounted for around 60% of all waste (by weight) collected from our trash traps and from clean-ups.

This litter not only detracts from the natural beauty of the Anacostia River, but it also poses a threat to human health and wildlife through its breakdown to microplastics. One way we can combat plastic bottle litter in the Anacostia River is through the DC Bottle Bill. This is a great step towards a future of a #PlasticFree Anacostia. Learn more about the Bottle Bill!
