Anacostia Riverkeeper congratulates DC Mayor Muriel Bowser and the Josh Harris ownership group for reaching an agreement to bring the Washington Commanders back to DC at the RFK stadium site. In the words of Anacostia Riverkeeper President Suzy Kelly, “We believe that the new stadium can be a win-win for the city and the river.”

The Anacostia River is a precious natural resource that enhances the quality of life for all residents that needs to be considered as the riverfront site undergoes development. This is an opportunity for the new Commander Stadium to be cutting edge in stormwater management and playing a major role in the continuing movement towards a fishable and swimmable Anacostia River.

We look forward to working with both the Commanders and the District government to ensure that the development of the new stadium site prioritizes the protection of the Anacostia riverfront environment including Kingman and Heritage islands, allows community access to the waterway, and aligns with ongoing water quality improvement efforts. This aligns with the mission of Anacostia Riverkeeper to protect and restore the Anacostia River for all who live, work, and play in its watershed, and to advocate for a clean river for all its communities.
