Virtual Volunteer Quality Monitoring Training: Upper Anacostia

June 16 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

Anacostia Riverkeeper, funded by NFWF and working with multiple partner organizations (Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, Corazon Latino, Friends of Lower Beaverdam Creek and Friends of Sligo Creek), will be conducting bi-weekly water quality monitoring to inform the public about up-to-date water quality health as well as help inform long-term policy decisions about D.C. and Maryland waterways. Spanish translations will be available and please reach out to monitor@anacostiariverkeeper.org for more information.

We will be collecting water quality samples from 7 sites in D.C. and Maryland on the Anacostia River. Each site will be sampled for bacteria, water temperature, air temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and turbidity and then analyzed in the Anacostia Riverkeeper lab. Do not worry if these terms are unfamiliar: all will be taught in the training! We need your help to sample these sites every other week throughout the summer! Sampling is done Wednesday with Thursday mornings as a back up for weather. All data goes online 24-hours later after the samples are analyzed.

All interested volunteers are required to attend one 90-minute virtual training session. There will be two training days, from 12-1:30 PM via WebEx platform. You will receive the link to the video call and training manual beforehand. Si necesita traductor para la capacitacion, mandanos un correo electronico antes del 3 de junio

Please reserve your spot by getting a ticket through this Eventbrite.

Volunteers will be notified when the 2020 monitoring season will begin. The program has a work plan to ensure volunteers follow MD Department of Health COVID-19 guidelines. Monitoring with volunteers will not take place until the stay-at-home orders in PG and Montgomery Counties are lifted.
