DC Water’s Clean Rivers Project
The Anacostia River Tunnel Project is the second in a series of four tunnels that will mitigate combined sewer overflows that are currently discharged to the Anacostia River. In March 2018, upon completion of this first phase of the Clean Rivers Project, combined sewer overflows to the Anacostia River have now been reduced by 81 percent. The overall goal of the Clean Rivers Project is to reduce the volume of combined sewer overflows, thereby reducing the amount of potentially harmful bacteria into the river and hopefully allowing the Anacostia to be swimmable once again. Check out the current water quality along the Anacostia here.
